BATELEUR

With its sunrise-tinted beak, chestnut back, silver wings and ink black body, the Bateleur has provided this collection with vibrant inspiration. One of Africa’s most iconic eagles spends almost all of its time on the wing in deep blue sub-Saharan skies. In French, its name means “street performer”, a reference to its unique style of soaring, much like the wavering of a tightrope walker. However, in 2009 the Bateleur was placed on the Near-Threatened IUCN Red List. While it currently thrives in conservation areas, beyond these notional boundaries the picture is bleak. Slowly, the conservation movement is wising up to the idea that while fenced-off havens provide a degree of sanctity for endangered creatures such as the Bateleur, they are merely window-dressing the real problem: how to accommodate humans and our activities in environments where wildlife can thrive? Unless we can better answer this question, we risk the planet fast becoming a collection of ever diminishing natural theme parks.
